I applied, but the position closed and that was that. Or so I thought. A few weeks back though, I received an email as well as a phone call from HSLDA, asking me to re-apply. I ignored it, not having much of a desire to move to Virginia. As much as I love that state, with its history and natural beauty, I love my friends, family, life, and culture here in Louisiana. However, HSLDA contacted a friend of mine, asking her to get in touch with me to talk me into contacting them. I did so, and a phone interview took place. I told them that I would think it over, and get back with them in a few days. Before I was able to call them back with a decision, they called me again and asked me to fly up to visit with them, and check things out. I agreed. The worst that could happen was a free trip to VA for two days!

After meeting for hours with my potential future boss, chatting with several of the guys and gals that I would be working with, and getting a tour of the office, my mind started to change on the matter. A few more days of prayer, and I decided to accept the job. So I will be leaving for Virginia on Thursday, to start the next chapter of my life. I do not yet have a place to live, so if you know of anything, let me know.

I will be working as a legal assistant for one of the attorneys. While its impossible to know every duty I may run across before I even start, some of the things I will be doing is handling client calls, tracking legislation in 11 states that might affect our clients, researching the law, and more. In my spare time, I plan to continue my education and take full advantage of every opportunity I have available while living so close to Washington, DC.

October 31st...

October 31st is better known to most people simply as Halloween. A happy little holiday with free candy and children dressed up in cute costumes. For adults, its a chance to go out to a party, get loaded, and try to score a one night stand. I will not attempt to give an exhaustive history here on the holiday. The short form is that it stems from ancient Celtic attempts to ward off evil spirits by dressing up to hide themselves. So why do Christians have anything to do with these festivities?

Here are a few scriptures to ponder:

3rd John 1:11 "Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate good. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons."

Now, what about churches that have "Fall Festivals" or "Family Festival"? Their hearts seem to be in the right place. They simply want to offer the kids a safe, 'demon free' environment to get free candy and wear cute costumes. Some churches also use it as an evangelical tool for the community as well. We certainly don't want the kiddos to miss out, right? But what are we really teaching them? That the world has something wonderful to offer, but we are going to sanitize it and make it Christian? That sounds to me just like saying you can have a family friendly Mardi Gras, or if you use enough little black squares, you can have family friendly porn.
Why get near it? Flee from evil in all forms. DON'T IMITATE THE WORLD! We are called to be a people set apart. This does not mean just slightly different. It means VASTLY different. Easily distinguishable. If you want to do something with your kids on October 31st... tell them about John Calvin, since he was born on this day, and then pray for the lost souls wondering through the darkness, looking for a small treat to satisfy them.

Witherspoon School of Law & Public Policy

I would like to strongly recommend the purchase of the 2008 Witherspoon School of Law & Public Policy CD set, available from the Vision Forum. This series of 16 lectures is on various aspects of our culture that are in desperate need for Christians to rise up and challenge the status quo from a Biblical mindset. Topics such as the Christian foundations of Western Civilization, women in politics, Christians in the courts, the battle for marriage, and gun control are all addressed from the view points of history and the Scriptures by men such as Doug Phillips, Larry Pratts, Judge Roy Moore, and others.
I recommend this not just to those that are interested in becoming lawyers, but to all men in general that desire to be informed on current issues and are willing to take a stand for Christ in every area of life.

Getting started

This is my first post.
